Home > Services > Behaviours of Concern Behaviours of Concern Here at Amore Complex Care, we are passionate about supporting our clients to live a happy and healthy life – focusing on improving and maintaining a good quality of life. Our Approach When required we utilise a trauma informed processes and comply with ethical standards, eliminating unnecessary restrictions and instead put strategies in place to help mitigate behaviours of concern and methods to help with de-escalation. Our goal is to improve our clients’ quality of life. From improving their emotional wellbeing and enhancing their existing relationships, to encouraging community integration and building life skills – we are passionate about promoting the independence of our clients. We encourage them to take an active role in their support, which may include cooking, cleaning and personal care. Resulting from our use of the Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) framework, we have seen substantial improvements in our clients’ quality of life. This includes a reduction in restrictive practices observed through data collection and direct observation and greater community participation including accessing day services, community centres and activities. We also work on improving independence using active support models, this aims to enhance the individual’s skills and engagement within their own activities such as cooking, cleaning and personal care. PBS Plans We develop PBS plans that are fully individualised to each client. We actively seek the client’s views using accessible communication methods such as visual tools, easy-read materials, social stories, and visual diagrams. The plans are produced by our PBS Specialist through conversation, observation, and collaboration with the individual and their family. Where appropriate and beneficial, we also develop PBS workbooks, which are easy-read versions of the plan, designed to further capture the client’s perspective. We carry out regular reviews of each plan with the individual and their family, ensuring that goals and outcomes continue to improve over time, rather than focusing solely on reducing behaviours of concern. UNDERSTANDING PBS PBS Maintenance Phase As part of our PBS approach, we have a dedicated maintenance phase for individuals who have made progressed towards their behavioural goals. This phase is designed for people whose PBS plans have successfully reduced behaviours of concern and enabled them to engage more consistently in meaningful activities that promote independence, wellbeing and a fulfilling life. Individuals in the maintenance phase are supported by our dedicated PBS Coordinator, who carries out regular reviews and check-ins to ensure progress is maintained. PBS plans are continually monitored and updated where required, while support teams deliver activities and interventions in-line with the guidance set out within each individual’s plan. This proactive approach helps ensure positive outcomes are sustained while responding to any changes in need. By adopting this structured model of PBS, our PBS Lead is able to focus their specialist expertise on individuals with more complex behavioural support needs who are working towards the maintenance phase. This enables us to provide timely interventions, develop robust PBS strategies and ensure every individual receives the level of support that is right for them at each stage of their journey. OUR SERVICES What Sets our Behavioural Services Apart? Evidence-Based Approach to Wellbeing When supporting individuals with behaviours of concern, our approach is informed by direct observations in multiple environments, Antecedent Behaviour Consequence (ABC) and incident forms, along with data insights. This helps us understand changes in behaviours based on environments, seasons and times. We also use the PERMA (Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment) model – a tool used to consider quality of life indicators when evaluating the impact of our support. By collating this information, we can produce tailored PBS plans based on reliable findings and outcomes. A Focus on Reducing Restraint Our PBS approach to behavioural support provides our Support Workers with evidence-based techniques to help prevent behaviours of concern. This includes primary prevention – encouraging independence and teaching coping techniques, along with secondary prevention – supporting the client whilst they are distressed to prevent behaviours of concern. We also use reactive strategies, which addresses behaviours following the incident. Using this values-led approach, we can reduce the use of restraint and instead teach our clients helpful methods to support them to live a happy life. Community Integration Our tailored PBS plans include a focus on helping clients integrate into their local community. This may be through encouraging them to engage in new activities, join social clubs or enhance life skills in a community setting. We also host regular events and activities based in our office, with the aim to give our clients new opportunities, gain new skills, build bonds with our wider team and meet fellow clients. Real-Time Digital Records Using iplanit, our digital care planning platform, support workers can record behavioural reflections, notes, and logs in real-time after every shift. Every entry is time-stamped and attributed, creating a complete and auditable record of the support delivered. This enables proactive review by office-based staff and gives health and social care professionals, case managers, and families real-time visibility of the client’s progress, goals, and the support they receive. Transparency Through Collaboration We are committed to continuous improvement, which is why we encourage clients, families, and health and social care professionals to share their feedback with us. We do this through anonymous feedback forms via our compliance and quality improvement tool, moa. Expert-Led Training Support teams receive comprehensive, interactive training led by our positive behaviour support specialist, alongside mandatory frameworks that drive clinical assurance. We are fully compliant with the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism framework, delivering this as rigorous, classroom based Tier 2 training for our frontline workforce. Combined with our active BABICM membership, this ensures our staff use evidence based, proactive strategies to minimise restrictive practices and safely support individuals demonstrating complex behaviours of concern.
